Introduction to Logistics

February 28, 2010 at 7:02 pm (Logistics trends) (, , , )

February in Valencia and we enrolled to the new course of Logistics.

I was wondering whats is all about. I`ve seen a lot of logistics centers around big cities (see Valencia,Barcelona,Athens) but first didn’t know many things. I used to work partially in a english fruit importation company where a lot of big trucks was leaving from Greece to England . Well that`s  called supply chain. A company makes a product (in our case packages of fruits)and it delivers to another company. Then those products are sold to customers.

Everyone can definite in a different way  the Logistics but always the main part is the same.

Logistics is the management of the flow of goods, products etc between the point of origin and its destination in order to meet the requirements of the customers. Wikipedia

For me Logistics is the science of planning, managing and organizing the way of how the products can efficiency stored and move to the customer. Is hard to define and provide the right information. Logistics involves everything transportation, production, distribution and probably warehousing.

The science of the logistics has increased the last years and that`s because globalization is also getting higher. Companies are expanding and sending their products all over the world. We live in an open market and the borders are loosing their meaning. Ports, airports and train infrastructures become better and better which means carry more goods in a more efficient way.

Logistics is defined as a business planning framework for the management of material, service, information and capital flows. It includes the increasingly complex information, communication and control systems required in today’s business environment. (Logistix Partners Oy, Elsinki, 1996)

Below a logistics video explanation, showing what is all about and how warehouses manage the goods.
